Let's talk batteries!
It's all about the volts
So, my 2017 Subaru Forester just died on me. I went to start it, and nothing, zilch, zero.
I took out my multimeter and checked the voltage: 5.56 V! The battery had gone flat in a matter of days.
After a quick rant to the heavens, I called an at-home service to charge it. Then, I took it to the dealership. On the way, the right window died.
A bad battery can cause mayhem on your car, but mine never indicated any issues. So, are car battery indicators reliable? Let’s find out!
P.S.: Here’s to hoping my Subaru has no more gremlins.

Key Takeaways
Don’t have much time? Here’s the summary of what we’re talking about:
Reliability of Car Battery Indicators: We explore the effectiveness of different car battery indicators. The Magic Eye Indicator, while common, has limitations in accuracy, as it only measures the charge in one compartment and may not give a correct reading when the battery is low. Alternatively, using a multimeter provides a more precise reading of the battery's charge, with a fully charged battery showing 12.6 volts. For the most accurate assessment, dedicated battery testers are recommended over both the magic eye and multimeters.
Jeep Model Comparison - YJ vs. TJ: Dive into the world of Jeep Wranglers as we compare the YJ and TJ models. Discover their key differences, which could influence your choice between these iconic vehicles. Find out which model might suit your preferences and lifestyle better, and join the debate on which one reigns supreme.
FM Transmitters and Battery Power: Concerned about whether an FM transmitter can drain your car battery? We clarify this common question for car owners with older vehicles looking to enjoy modern music. While FM transmitters generally don't drain battery power significantly, the article provides insights on how to use them effectively without affecting your car battery.

KERN’S CORNER
Are car battery indicators reliable?
Let’s face it: nobody wants to have battery issues, but it’s a part of owning a car. Our very own Kern has seen his fair share of trouble with old batteries, and we’re sure you’ve also faced them!
So, he wanted to discuss car battery indicators. There are several in the market, and they vary in reliability and accuracy.
Here are some of the most popular:
Magic Eye Indicator: The magic eye is a common battery indicator that uses a colored ball in a liquid-filled tube to show the battery charge. When charged, the ball floats to the top, becoming visible through the glass "eye."
However, this method isn't always accurate. It only measures the charge in one of the battery's compartments and can fail to give a correct reading, especially when the battery is low.
Using a Multimeter: A multimeter provides a more accurate reading of the battery's charge. To use it, the car should be off, and the multimeter should be set to DC volts.
After connecting the multimeter to the battery's terminals, it gives a voltage reading. A fully charged battery shows 12.6 volts, and readings below 12 volts indicate low or no power.
Dedicated Battery Testers: Dedicated battery testers are recommended for the most precise and accurate battery testing. They are more reliable than both the magic eye and multimeters.
While multimeters are versatile and accurate, they are not as user-friendly or precise as dedicated car battery testers.
Most drivers don’t carry a multimeter or a dedicated battery tester, but the reality is that they’re the most reliable. That’s not the only step you should take when caring for your battery. Here are more tips to consider.
